J-1 exchange visitor visas at a glance
The J-1 visa is a U.S. nonimmigrant visa for participants in approved educational and cultural exchange programs. J-1 categories include interns, trainees, teachers, students, research scholars and other authorized exchange participants.
A participant generally works with a State Department-designated program sponsor. The sponsor registers the participant in SEVIS and issues Form DS-2019, which is required for the J-1 visa application process.

The J-1 classification is used for approved exchange programs that can include interns, trainees, researchers, teachers, students and other authorized exchange categories.

Certain J-1 participants may be subject to the two-year home-country physical presence requirement under section 212(e), depending on the program, funding and other applicable circumstances.
